The Aquarium Tropical is located in the basement of the Palais de la Porte Dorée, an Art Deco building in the twelfth arrondissement built for the nineteen thirty-one Colonial Exposition. The palace facade features elaborate bas-reliefs by the sculptor Alfred Janniot, showing ships, oceans, and diverse wildlife, which help identify the site from the street.
