The Square de l'Oiseau-Lunaire is defined by the bronze sculpture of the same name, created by Joan Miró in nineteen sixty-six. This dark, abstract form stands within the four thousand two hundred square meter park, watching over the sandboxes and ping-pong tables. Miró gifted the piece to the city in nineteen seventy-four, intending it as a tribute to his friend, the poet Robert Desnos. Desnos had been a frequent visitor to the artists' studios that once occupied this very ground before they were demolished in the early nineteen fifties.
