The Tour Montparnasse is a two hundred ten-meter glass and steel monolith that stands as the only skyscraper in central Paris. Completed in nineteen seventy-three on the site of the former Montparnasse railway station, its stark, dark façade towers above the surrounding traditional low-rise buildings. This height difference created a silhouette so controversial that it prompted the French government to ban the construction of similar skyscrapers in the city center just four years after the tower opened.
