The École Militaire is defined by a massive, symmetrical neoclassical facade featuring Corinthian columns and a quadrangular dome, all facing the open expanse of the Champ-de-Mars. King Louis the Fifteenth commissioned this training ground in seventeen fifty-one to educate young noblemen who lacked the financial means for a traditional military commission. Architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel designed the complex to serve as a center for professional officer training, a mission it continues to fulfill for senior staff and military researchers today.
