The Champ de Mars is a vast open space known today for the Eiffel Tower, but in the summer of seventeen ninety-one, it became the site of a violent confrontation between the city’s National Guard and its own citizens. Following the failed attempt by King Louis the Sixteenth to flee the country, a movement grew to depose the monarch and establish a republic. On July seventeenth, fifty thousand people gathered on this plain to sign a petition calling for the king's removal.
