The most striking feature of the Dôme des Invalides is its soaring, gold-gilded lantern, which crowns the baroque chapel and rises to a height of one hundred and seven meters. This structure was designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and completed in seventeen hundred and six as a royal chapel for the Hôtel National des Invalides, a site originally founded by King Louis XIV to house and care for disabled war veterans.
