The Jardin d'Acclimatation spans nineteen hectares of rolling land along the edge of the Bois de Boulogne. Emperor Napoleon the Third and Empress Eugénie commissioned this park in eighteen sixty, envisioning a site where exotic plants and animals could adapt to the climate of France. They recruited a team of prominent figures to realize this project, including the urban planner Baron Haussmann, the engineer Jean-Charles Alphand, and the zoologist Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire.
