The Musée Gaumont occupies the lower levels of the corporate headquarters for the Gaumont film company. Established in eighteen ninety-five by the engineer Léon Gaumont, the organization holds the distinction of being the oldest film studio still in operation today. Because the company serves as a major commercial center for international film production and distribution, this site is generally closed to the public, functioning primarily as a private archive that safeguards the history of an enterprise which has operated for over one hundred thirty years.
