The name Bagatelle, often encountered in French locations, typically traces back to a legendary challenge from seventeen seventy-seven. Queen Marie-Antoinette wagered her brother-in-law, the Count of Artois, that he could not construct a country house in less than one hundred days. The Count accepted, employing eight hundred workers around the clock to finish the project in just sixty-four. He named the result his folly, a place for hunting and late-night festivities far from the rigid constraints of the royal court.
