Parc Monceau is defined by its gold-tipped wrought iron gates that enclose an eclectic collection of architectural follies. Established in seventeen seventy-eight by Philippe d’Orléans, the Duke of Chartres, the park was intended as a private fantasy world. The Duke worked with the artist Louis Carrogis Carmontelle to fill the grounds with an absurd, mismatched landscape that featured a miniature Egyptian pyramid, a Roman colonnade, a Dutch windmill, and even live camels tended by servants in flamboyant costumes.
