The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is marked by a slab of granite from Vire inscribed with the words, "Here rests a French soldier who died for the Fatherland, nineteen fourteen–nineteen eighteen." It is framed by a ring of small pillars connected by metal chains, situated directly beneath the center of the Arc de Triomphe.
