The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is defined by its five spires topped with gilded, bulbous domes. These domes, which rise above the surrounding Haussmannian apartment blocks, symbolize Jesus Christ and the four evangelists. Consecrated in eighteen sixty-one, the cathedral stands on Rue Daru in the eighth arrondissement. It was the first Russian Orthodox place of worship built in France, funded through contributions from the local Russian community and a significant donation from Tsar Alexander the Second.
