The Hôtel de la Marine is distinguished by its monumental neoclassical facade on the eastern side of the Place de la Concorde. Completed in seventeen seventy-four by the king's chief architect, Ange-Jacques Gabriel, the building was originally constructed to house the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne, the royal repository for furniture, tapestries, and the crown jewels. Its twin structure, located across the Rue Royale, is now known as the Hôtel de Crillon.
