Porte de Clignancourt is defined by its wide, bustling transit hub, where the northern terminus of metro line four meets the tramway and traffic flowing toward the Périphérique ring road. The name marks the site of a former gate in the Thiers wall, a massive military fortification built between eighteen forty-one and eighteen forty-four to encircle the city. While the wall itself was demolished in the nineteen twenties, the gate remained an essential threshold, connecting the eighteenth arrondissement to the town of Saint-Ouen.
