Saint-Vincent Cemetery

Saint-Vincent Cemetery is identifiable by its compact footprint of less than one hectare, squeezed tightly against the northern slope of the Montmartre hill. It opened in January eighteen thirty-one to serve the residents of the village of Montmartre after the older, smaller Saint-Pierre cemetery reached its capacity. At that time, the hill was still an independent commune of vineyards and gypsum quarries rather than a bustling urban district.
