Butte du Chapeau Rouge

The Parc de la Butte-du-Chapeau-Rouge is defined by its dramatic hillside elevation, which offers a panoramic view over the northeastern suburbs of Paris. Designed by architect Léon Azéma and opened in nineteen thirty-nine, the park sits on the site of former gypsum quarries once known as the Carrières d'Amérique. Its layout breaks from the winding, picturesque style common to earlier Parisian green spaces, favoring instead a formal, modernist composition of wide stairways, terraced lawns, and belvederes connected by structured paths.
