Theatre De La Michodière

The Theatre de la Michodière stands out for an unusual architectural quirk: its entrance opens directly onto the first balcony level rather than the ground floor. Designed by architect Auguste Bluysen and inaugurated in nineteen twenty-five, the building was forced into this unconventional layout because of the tight, narrow plot of land it occupies. To satisfy building codes of the era, the developers had to incorporate residential apartments into the structure above the theater, which required creative engineering to support the heavy double-elliptical dome.
