Théâtre du Vieux Colombier

The Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier stands at twenty-one rue du Vieux-Colombier, recognizable by its entrance on a street named for the old neighborhood identity it once marked. Founded in nineteen thirteen by Jacques Copeau, the theater began as a rebellion against the commercial, star-driven productions that dominated Paris at the time. Copeau, a critic and director, sought to renovate dramatic art by stripping away ornate distractions and focusing entirely on the actor and the text. He even chose the theater's emblem—two doves found on a floor tile in Florence—to reflect a sense of simplicity.
