The Théâtre Robert-Houdin once stood as a legendary center for illusion, beginning its life in eighteen forty-five at the Palais-Royal before moving to its long-term home at number eight, Boulevard des Italiens. Founded by the master magician Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin, the venue replaced the noisy atmosphere of traditional fairground magic with the quiet, refined setting of a bourgeois drawing room. Instead of pointed caps and theatrical flair, audiences found a performer in evening dress who presented mind-reading illusions and mechanical automata with the polished elegance of a private host.
