Église Saint-Louis-en-l'Île

The Église Saint-Louis-en-l'Île is identifiable by the unusual iron clock that hangs from the side of its bell tower, extending over the street like an old-fashioned shop sign. Located in the heart of the island, the church is squeezed tightly between surrounding buildings, leaving it without a traditional front square or grand entryway. The bell tower itself is an openwork stone pyramid, a design specifically chosen in the eighteenth century to allow the powerful winds that sweep across the island to pass directly through the structure.
