The most distinctive feature of the Place de la Bataille-de-Stalingrad is the Rotonde de la Villette, a circular, neoclassical building designed by architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux in the late eighteenth century. Originally constructed as one of the tollhouses for the Farmers-General Wall, it functioned as a checkpoint where officers collected taxes on all goods entering Paris.
