Rue Mouffetard Market

Rue Mouffetard is a cobblestone street that descends from Place de la Contrescarpe toward the Square Saint-Médard, marked by its dense collection of permanent food shops, produce stalls, and historic facades that date back centuries. It is widely considered one of the oldest streets in Paris, tracing its path to a Roman road that once connected the city of Lutetia to Italy. While the area was once a village known for the pungent waste of tanners and skinners living along the nearby Bièvre River, it escaped the sweeping demolitions of Baron Haussmann in the nineteenth century.
