The Marché des Capucins is easily identified by its sprawling nineteenth-century metal structure, which has sheltered the city’s largest food market since eighteen seventy-eight. Known to locals as the "belly of Bordeaux," the market occupies a space that once served as a site for a cattle auction in the seventeen hundreds. It takes its name from the Capuchin friars, a religious order that settled in this area in the early seventeenth century and wore brown robes with distinctive pointed hoods.
