The Cathédrale Saint-André de Bordeaux is marked by the Tour Pey-Berland, a massive bell tower that stands entirely detached from the main cathedral building. Construction on the cathedral began in the eleventh century, though most of the structure seen today dates to the Gothic period between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. The tower was built separately in the fifteenth century to prevent the heavy vibrations of its bells from damaging the cathedral's foundation.
