The Porte Cailhau stands thirty-five meters tall, featuring distinct pepper-pot turrets, a high slate roof, and mullioned windows that distinguish it from the surrounding architecture. Constructed between fourteen ninety-three and fourteen ninety-five, this limestone gateway was the primary entrance to Bordeaux through the medieval city walls. It displays a mix of defensive military features, such as machicolations and loopholes, alongside the decorative elements of the emerging Renaissance style.
