The Palais Rohan is recognized by its austere, symmetrical neoclassical façade and a grand courtyard of honor that sits directly across from the Saint-André Cathedral. This eighteenth-century structure was commissioned in seventeen seventy-one by Archbishop Ferdinand Maximilien Mériadec de Rohan to replace a medieval residence he deemed unworthy of his station. The project took thirteen years to complete, and it is built in the style of a private mansion set between a courtyard and a garden.
