The Musée National des Douanes occupies the Hôtel des Fermes du Roi, a grand eighteenth-century building bordering the Place de la Bourse. This site was built to house the Ferme Générale, the precursor to the French customs service, and it has remained home to customs operations for over two centuries. The permanent collection is housed within a forty-meter-long vaulted stone hall that once served as a warehouse for clearing goods.
