The Théâtre des Carmes André Benedetto occupies a building at number six Place des Carmes that originated as a parish hall, the Salle Saint-Benoît. Its history as a theater began in nineteen sixty-three when André Benedetto, a playwright and director, established his troupe, the Nouvelle Compagnie d'Avignon, within the former religious space. The building retains structural reminders of its past, including two interior pillars that remain part of the stage area because they cannot be removed.
