Basilique Saint-Pierre

religious

The Basilique Saint-Pierre is defined by its flamboyant Provençal Gothic facade, the most elaborate of any church in Avignon. Standing four meters high, its solid walnut doors are a masterpiece of sixteenth-century craftsmanship, featuring intricate relief carvings of religious figures. While the church has stood on this site since the seventh century, the current structure dates primarily to a reconstruction that began in thirteen fifty-eight, funded by a donation from Cardinal Pierre des Prés.
