The Rue de la Grande Fusterie follows the original path of the twelfth-century city wall. You can identify this street by the stone statues tucked into niches along its odd-numbered side. During the Middle Ages, this area was a gravel bank left by the shifting Rhône River, which served as a landing point for barges carrying timber from the Alps and the Jura mountains.
