Jardin des Doms

park garden

The Jardin des Doms is a public park set upon a high, rocky outcrop that rises thirty meters above the Rhône River. This natural cliff provided a safe, defensible position for the earliest settlers of Avignon as far back as the Neolithic period. While the site once held a medieval castle that burned in sixteen-fifty and was later replaced by windmills, it was transformed into its current English-style garden during the nineteenth century.
