Place de l’Horloge is a half-moon shaped square defined by its rows of large plane trees and the neoclassical facade of the Hôtel de Ville. It occupies the site of the ancient Roman forum of Avenio and served as the city’s primary market during the Middle Ages, when it was known as the Great Butcher's Shop. Today, the square functions as the civic and cultural center of Avignon, housing the city’s town hall and the Opéra Grand Avignon.
