Cimetière Saint-Véran

historic

The Cimetière Saint-Véran is marked by an entrance gate flanked by two stone pillars, each topped with a carved tragic mask. Established in eighteen twenty during the French Restoration, it stands as one of the oldest monumental cemeteries in France. The site covers fourteen hectares and contains roughly twelve thousand graves, arranged in forty numbered squares. The perimeter is lined with perpetual concessions, originally intended to act as structural supports to stabilize the cemetery walls against flooding and strong winds.
