Remparts d'Avignon

landmark

The Remparts d’Avignon form a continuous, four-point-three-kilometer ring of limestone fortifications encircling the historic center of the city. These medieval walls are defined by their nearly forty towers and their distinct boundary separating the dense, ancient core from the modern development beyond. They were built largely during the fourteenth century, a period when Avignon functioned as the seat of the papacy and the city’s population expanded rapidly beyond its older, inadequate defenses.
