The Cloître des Carmes is defined by the ribbed vaulting of its fourteenth-century chapter house and its role as a quiet, stone-walled sanctuary against the noise of the city. Originally granted to the Carmelite order in twelve sixty-seven by Pope John the Twenty-Second, the convent was built on land that once belonged to the Knights Templar, positioned just outside the early medieval city walls near a former colony for lepers.
