The Cloître des Célestins is defined by two mature plane trees rising from the center of its open-air space. This cloister, dating to the fourteenth century, was part of a grand monastic convent commissioned by the antipope Clement VII and King Charles VI of France. It remains the only royal foundation within the city walls of Avignon and once served as the wealthiest religious house in the region.
