Marseille Saint-Charles

landmark

Marseille Saint-Charles is marked by a monumental stone staircase of one hundred and four steps that connects the station, perched on a small hill, to the city streets below. When it opened in eighteen forty-eight, the station stood isolated from the urban center, occupying the site of a former cemetery. This railway hub served as a primary gateway for travelers heading toward the Mediterranean, Africa, and the Middle East before the era of modern aviation.
