Ulrepforte

The Ulrepforte is identified by its double-towered gate structure and the attached windmill tower, a relic of the thirteenth-century medieval wall that once encircled Cologne. Known locally as the Ülepooz, its name derives from the Ulner, or potters, who operated their kilns nearby. While most of the city’s defensive gates were built to handle traffic, this was the smallest of the gates, spanning only four meters. By the middle of the fifteenth century, the passage was walled up, and a mill was added to the structure to supply the nearby Carthusian monastery.
