The Church of Saint Pantaleon is distinguished by a heavy, monumental westwork and two sturdy towers that anchor the structure's early Romanesque profile. Built upon the foundations of an ancient Roman villa, the church serves as the final resting place for two figures who shaped the city in the tenth century: Archbishop Bruno the Great, who founded the monastery here in nine fifty-five, and the Byzantine princess Empress Theophanu.
