An Groß Sankt Martin

other

Groß Sankt Martin is identified by a massive square crossing tower flanked by four smaller corner turrets, a silhouette that rises prominently over the Old Town. This Romanesque basilica stands on the site of a former island in the Rhine, where archeological excavations have revealed foundations dating back to a Roman chapel from around nine hundred sixty. The building seen today was constructed between eleven fifty and twelve fifty, replacing an earlier structure destroyed by fire.
