Roman Townwall

The Roman Townwall of Cologne is a nearly four-kilometer-long defensive ring that once enclosed the ancient city of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. Constructed toward the end of the first century, the wall rose over eight meters high and featured nineteen round towers and nine gates, creating a formidable barrier that remained in use until the twelfth century. Today, fragments of this massive fortification appear throughout the modern cityscape, sometimes tucked into parking garages or standing alongside contemporary residential buildings as silent reminders of the city’s Roman origins.
