Gürzenich Köln

The Gürzenich is distinguished by its late Gothic façade featuring tall, narrow cross windows and small turrets at each corner. Above its arched eastern entrances, stone statues depict Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, the Roman founder of Cologne, and Marsilius, a legendary defender of the city. Originally commissioned by the city council and completed in fourteen forty-seven, the building was designed as a grand civic hall. It served as a venue for imperial diets and royal receptions, eventually earning its reputation as the city's front parlor.
