St. Kolumba, Cologne

The most striking visual feature of this place is the series of perforated gray brick walls that wrap around the site, creating a modern shell for ancient stone remnants. This is the Kolumba museum, which occupies the historic grounds of the medieval St. Kolumba church. The church, which traced its origins back to the year nine hundred eighty, was once one of the largest parish churches in the city before it was almost completely destroyed by Allied bombing in nineteen forty-three.
