Church of St. Maria in Lyskirchen

religious

St. Maria in Lyskirchen is the smallest of the twelve Romanesque churches in Cologne, identifiable by its three-aisled basilica structure and its position near the banks of the Rhine. First mentioned in a document from nine hundred forty-eight as a private chapel founded by a nobleman named Lysolvus, the current building dates to between twelve ten and twelve twenty. It is the only Romanesque church in the city that escaped total destruction during the Second World War, sustaining only damage to its roof.
