The Römische Stadtmauer, or Roman city wall, once enclosed the ancient core of Cologne with nearly four kilometers of stone. You can identify surviving sections by their heavy foundation blocks and the distinct, layered gray masonry that follows the irregular grid of the modern city center. Originally built in the late first century, the wall once stood eight meters high, defended by nineteen round towers and nine gates that controlled access to the harbor and the surrounding province.
