Museum Ludwig is a modern building of stark white geometric shapes, set against the historic stone of the Cologne Cathedral. It was founded in nineteen seventy-six after Peter and Irene Ludwig, a couple who built their wealth in the chocolate industry, donated three hundred and fifty pieces of modern art to the city. Their gift carried a single, firm condition: the collection had to be housed in a building bearing their name.
