The Praetorium lies beneath the medieval Town Hall, or Rathaus, of Cologne. It is recognizable by the archaeological remains of stone foundations and thick walls that suggest the footprint of a large, complex Roman structure. This was the seat of power for the Imperial Governor of Lower Germania, serving as the administrative heart of the province from the first through the fourth centuries.
