Eigelsteintorburg

The Eigelsteintorburg stands as a massive, twin-towered gatehouse constructed from sandstone. Built during the second quarter of the thirteenth century, it served as the northernmost entry point for the medieval city wall that once protected Cologne with over fifty towers and twelve such gates. While most of these fortifications were demolished in the nineteenth century, this structure survived to mark the boundary of the city's third major expansion.
