Temple of Apollo Pythios

The Temple of Apollo Pythios stands on the western side of the ancient Acropolis of Rhodes, recognizable by its re-erected Doric columns that rise against the horizon. Constructed during the Hellenistic era between the third and first centuries before Christ, this peripteral temple originally featured eleven columns along its long sides and six across its front. It was built from locally quarried porous limestone, a material that once caught the Aegean sunlight to serve as a navigational landmark for ships approaching the island.
