St. George's Bastion

St. George’s Bastion stands as a massive, pentagonal projection on the northwestern corner of the fortifications in the old town of Rhodes. It marks a critical shift in military history, where the Knights Hospitaller adapted their existing medieval stone walls to survive the new, devastating power of gunpowder artillery. The structure encased an earlier defensive tower within thick layers of stone and earth to create a platform capable of housing heavy cannon batteries.
